Project 877
Project 877

The Soviet Union commissioned the first Project 877 submarine in 1982 with a total of 24 delivered in the 1990s. Russia is offering a series of upgrades that potentially could convert existing Project 877 ships in state-of-the-art submarines with enhanced hunter-killer capability. Inclusion of Klub/Club-S multi-purpose torpedo-launched weapons family will enable engagement of surface ships with latest generation air defense systems such as US AEGIS, and its European counterparts APAR, EMPAR, and SAMPSON. The Project 877E and 877EKM submarines, intended for the export market, are based on the project 877 design but encompassing minor modifications aimed at fulfilling the foreign customer’s requirements. The first Project 877E boats were delivered to the Indian and Polish Navies in 1986. The first Project 877EKM submarine modified to home the Club-S missile complex was delivered to the Indian Navy in 2000.
