ESR 220
The Reutech Radar Systems ESR 220, also known by its nicknames “Thutlwa” (Zulu) or “Kameelperd” (Afrikaans), both meaning “Giraffe,” is a South African L-band 2D surveillance radar. Developed around 2000 and delivered to the South African Army, this air defense radar is mounted on an 8x8 all-terrain transporter and provides early warning for mechanized troops. It is a fully autonomous armored system with an integrated Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, a self-contained power plant, and a planar array antenna on a 12-meter mast. The ESR 220, which has an instrumented range of 120 km (65 nautical miles) and a pulse width of 1.2 microseconds, can track up to 1,000 targets simultaneously and can be made operational by its five-person crew within two minutes of deployment.
