AN/APG-63
The AN/APG-63, an X-band multimode pulse-Doppler airborne radar, was manufactured by Hughes Electronics in the United States and became operational in 1973. Operating over a number of selectable frequencies, it features a Traveling Wave Tube transmitter and a mechanically steered planar-array antenna with slotted waveguides on a three-axis gimbal system. This radar, with a peak power of 5.2 kW and an instrumented range of 175 km (90 NM), was the first airborne system to incorporate a software-programmable signal processor and was installed in USAF F-15 A/B and early F-15 C/D supersonic fighter aircraft until production ceased in 1986. Subsequent upgrades include the AN/APG-63(V)1, which improved reliability and maintainability for F-15 C/D aircraft, the AN/APG-63(V)2 for F-15C aircraft featuring an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA), and the AN/APG-63(V)3, which combines the AN/APG-63(V)2's electronic improvements with the AN/APG-79 antenna.
