BlackShark
BlackShark
The BlackShark, also known as IF21, is a heavyweight torpedo developed by Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS) and marketed along with DCNS. It features an extremely quiet electric-propulsion system, silent 50 knots top speed, and a range of 50 km. Low life cycle costs and user-friendly logistic support will also be provided for this torpedo. Active/Passive acoustic homing head, multi-target capability and an counter-countermeasures system are the main characteristics of this advanced, long range torpedo. These features make BlackShark a serius contender in the long range torpedo market. In addition to the French Navy and the Italian Navy, the Navy of Chile has purchased BlackShark torpedoes to equip two Scorpene submarines due to enter service in 2005 and 2007. O'Higgins, the first Scorpene ordered by Chile, launched the first BlackShark torpedo on November 20, 2004, while submerged.
