Description

The Type 89, also known as Tiger, is a tracked Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) designed to complement the Type 90 Main Battle Tank (MBT) and Type 73 Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) within the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) armored regiments. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is responsible for the production of Type 89 armored vehicles for the JGSDF. Its primary mission is to provide fire support and to safely transport a fully equipped infantry squad to the battlefield. As of March 2006, the JGSDF had fielded 68 Type 89 infantry fighting vehicles. The Type 89 IFV equipment includes a 35mm cannon provided by Japan Steel Works; two turret-mounted Type 79 anti-tank and anti-aircraft missile launchers provided by Kawasaki, and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. Its 600-hp Mitsubishi SY31WA six-cylinder water-cooled four-cycle diesel engine permits a top speed of 70 kph on road. The seven-infantryman in the rear compartment can fire their firearms protected under armor. The Type 89 IFV is also equipped with an infrared camera enabling night vision.
