Description

The TRS-4D is a G-band (NATO designation) or C-band (IEEE designation) naval radar, manufactured by Airbus Defense and Space, Inc. of France. This three-dimensional, multi-function system provides surveillance, target acquisition, self-defense, gunfire support, and aircraft control, automatically detecting and tracking all air and sea targets to reduce crew workload. It is a software-defined radar utilizing a rotating active electronically scanned array (AESA) with multiple digitally formed beams, capable of an instrumented range of 250 km with an accuracy of 15 meters, 0.2 degrees in azimuth, and 0.5 degrees in elevation, and an antenna rotation speed of 15 or 30 revolutions per minute. The active antenna's transmitter modules use solid-state Gallium nitride (GaN) technology, allowing for graceful degradation of transmitted power based on required range. Since mid-2019, this rotating variant has also been known as “Rotator” to distinguish it from the “Fixed Panel” version. A variant, the MRESR, was designated AN/SPS-80 by the U.S. Navy and installed on Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ships, while a land-based version serves as the primary sensor for the IRIS-T SLM Ground Based Air Defense (GBAD) system.
