Description

The M829 APFSDS-T is a 120mm, armor-piercing, fin stabilized, depleted uranium penetrator, discarding sabot tracer round. The M829 round is compatible with all standard NATO smoothbore 120mm tank cannons. It is the primary anti-tank munition employed by the US M1 Abrams main battle tanks. In the Gulf War, it was nicknamed the "Silver Bullet". The M865 TP-T is a training round used to simulate the M829 anti-armor round. A team composed of General Dynamics and ATK was awarded a $39 million contract on December 9, 2004, by Australia to produce 120mm tank ammunition in support of the M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks on order from the United States. The contract included procurement of both tactical and training ammunition. Through this contract Australia will receive the latest 120 mm KEW-A2 tungsten APFSDS-T cartridge as well as the M830A1 ammunition. M829A3 is the most advanced armor-piercing round used on the M1A1/A2 Abrams tank family. ATK produced 35,000 M829A3 rounds for the US Army through to 2006.
