Description

The United States (US) Space Command Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) is a new space object surveillance system intended to provide critical information for collision avoidance. The Space Command will use the GSSAP to discern when adversaries attempt to avoid detection and to discover capabilities they may have, which might be harmful to US critical assets at these higher altitudes. The spacecraft will operate in near-geosynchronous orbit supporting the US Strategic Command space surveillance operations as a dedicated Space Surveillance Network sensor. GSSAP will allow more accurate tracking and characterization of man-made orbiting objects, uniquely contribute to timely and accurate orbital predictions, enhance knowledge of the geosynchronous orbit environment, and further enable space flight safety to include satellite collision avoidance. The existence of the GSSAP was released on February 21, 2014. Two spacecraft were slated for launch on the same vehicle before the end of 2014. Finally the two spacecrafts were launched by a Delta IV rocket from Cape Canaveral on July 23, 2014.
